To proofread or not to proofread

The other day I was chatting to my dad who is an avid reader. He devours books as if they were going out of fashion and never throws them away so has a house stuffed with books.
He was fed up with a book that he was reading that was full of errors so I asked him what irritated him about that. He said it was distracting and made him feel that he was being poorly served, despite the fact that the book was well written.
There is no excuse for any publisher to produce books that contain mistakes in spelling and grammar. There is an army of excellent proofreaders out there who don't charge a huge amount for their fantastic service.
